The novel "Bread on Uncle Milad's Table" by Libyan writer Muhammad Al-Naas won the International Prize for Arabic Fiction 2022 in its 15th session, according to what the head of the award jury announced this year, Dr. Shukri Al-Mabkhout, with the winner receiving a prize of $50,000, in addition to a translation His novel into English.

The novel deals with the different definitions of masculinity in the village community, but it retains one definition of the opposite or “non-man” for whom the birth of Al-Usta is a symbol, and the writer searches through it for the ideal definition of masculinity in his society.

It is set in a closed village society, in which Milad searches for the ideal definition of the ideal masculinity as he sees it, failing throughout his life to be a man after many attempts.

This novel questions prefabricated perceptions of the concept of "gender" and denounces the ready-made stereotypes that limit the functions of both women and men to specific frameworks if one of them crosses the line. It is the narrative of victory for the individual in the face of murderous collective ideas, and the narrative of victory for the human experience in the face of all fixed descriptions.

Libyan writer Muhammad Al-Naas said, in statements to the Booker Prize for Arabic Fiction website, that despite the large number of popular proverbs in Libya, there is only a single proverb that expresses the image he focused on in his novel, according to the popular proverb “A family and her uncle is Milad.”

Al-Naas added that the linguistic heritage in Libya only celebrates the image of the ideal man. clear to that man.

The writer Muhammad Al-Naas is a Libyan storyteller and journalist, born on March 31, 1991. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tripoli, in 2014.
