iScovaze

The iScovaze app wants to help citizens to report waste (scovaze, in the Trieste dialect) found in the natural environment (meadows, woods, beaches, etc.) so that they can be recovered by a team of associations / volunteers, ordinary citizens, environmentally sensitive public administrations.

Plastic is an invention of the second half of the nineteenth century. At the beginning of the twentieth century, more in-depth research began and in the years around the Second World War we arrived at a military use driven by this matter. Since the 1950s, the ant, polyester, nylon and other petroleum-derived materials have invaded the civilian world.

From there it is a growth that seems to have no end.

But it is the very strength of plastic - its resistance - that represents the environmental danger, which governments have only begun to notice. The financial power of the oil world has only made the situation worse.

 

Today, plastic is perhaps the most obvious aspect of abnormal waste production, but it is not the only one: electrical and electronic materials, heavy metals, nuclear waste are examples of materials that have a devastating environmental impact. And waste is found everywhere: in the most distant islands, in the depths of the oceans, in underground waters, in the organs of large and small living beings.

This application aims to foster the awareness of many people who do not yet understand how huge the amount of waste that is left in each place is and wants to promote awareness of environmental and health risks related to the production and abandonment of waste.

Today, all the Pacific Ocean waste islands, between California and Hawaii, are known to all, where plastic bottles, children's toys, electronic waste items, fishing nets float in what has been called Great Pacific Garbage Patch , a marine dump where the currents convey the discarded materials from all over the world.

But we live in a smaller, less striking, but very widespread reality. The lands, the sea, the crops, the plants and the animals coexist more and more with the waste and the knowledge of the abandonment sites identified with this application can help citizens and public bodies in the management of this terrible problem.

Our hope is that associations and institutions can adopt "i-scovaze" to raise public awareness, identify the paths of these waste and promote their recovery and storage in suitable sites, even if the real revolution would not be in the management of waste , but in reducing its production.
