For the 2015 model year, Volkswagen introduced the new seventh-generation Golf in the U.S. after starting sales in Europe about a year later. Volkswagen ended production of the Golf for the U.S. market and 46 years of the occasional output of the famous rabbit-badged sedan.

Last week, the previous standard models from the U.S. market rolled off the assembly line at Volkswagen's plant in Puebla, Mexico, but the performance-focused GTI and R models will return to the eighth-generation Golf platform in 2022. When this generation of Golf was introduced in 2015, it won the MotorTrends Car of the Year award. The car was successful due to its well-thought-out layout, good driving manners, and high fuel efficiency. The Golf is similar to the Honda Accord because Volkswagen started with a great car and spent almost years smoothing out edges and incremental improvements.

The V.W. Golf is built to be a pleasure to drive, and the 8-speed automatic transmission ensures smooth gear changes. It may not have an engine, but it's still a Golf to drive. But while the e-Golf has never been at the forefront of electric vehicle development, it works well as an electric vehicle for those who put familiarity first: drivers who want an electric car but want it to look and feel very much like a family car.

In 2008, Volkswagen brought the super-hot Golf-based R32 to the U.S. with a 3.2-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive. That same year, Volkswagen released the first Jetta, essentially a Golf with a trunk instead of a sunroof. In May 1974, Volkswagen introduced the first-generation Golf as a modern front-wheel-drive long-range replacement for the Volkswagen Beetle. Volkswagen sold nearly 69,000 Golfs in 2017, its highest since 1986. In 2020, Volkswagen sold around 82,660 Jettas for just 25,860 Golfs, according to MotorIntelligence. A total of 925 Volkswagen e-Golfs were sold in Norway in two and a half months, exceeding the initial sales of the Tesla Model S, which delivered 805 units to the Norwegian market in the first two months.

This approach to electrification also means that now that the eighth-generation model is on sale, there won't be another all-electric Golf. Customers will then need to purchase either the GTI or the Golf R. These models will be redesigned by 2022.

The Golf's steering is unmistakable and unusually quick for the class. The Golf's turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine delivers just the right amount of power to run this little hatchback right; it's perfect and reliable. The driver notices that the machine is choking only during high-speed overtaking on the highway. But to be honest with the e-Golf, this applies to all-electric vehicles and electric city cars of the same age, which also mostly have a range of fewer than 200 miles.
