Rinto Harahap (10 March 1949 – 9 February 2015) was an Indonesian singer, songwriter, and producer. In 1965 he founded the band The Mercy's consisting of Rinto Harahap himself, his brother Erwin Harahap, his friend Reynold Panggabean, Rizal Arsyad, and Iskandar. Then the formation changed with the entry of Charles Hutagalung to replace Iskandar and '''Albert Sumlang'' to replace Rizal Irsyad. This group achieved glory in the 1970s by releasing many songs that were hits at that time. Besides being a composer, he also had a recording company called Lolypop in the 1970-1980s era. Many Indonesian singers are popular thanks to their songs, including Nia Daniati, Betharia Sonata, Christine Panjaitan, Iis Sugianto, Rita Butar-butar, and Eddy Silitonga.

Rinto is the third of six children, the son of James Warren Harahap, the former Head of the BNI Bank Office in Sibolga and Siti Raya Boru Tobing, who is from Tarutung, North Tapanuli. He was born during the physical revolution when his father was transferred to Sibolga. Small Rinto once dreamed of becoming a doctor, but his father wanted him to become a priest. However, Rinto was determined to live from music. Rinto even had time to work for an iron-concrete company, while at night he was singing at a nightclub, before he entered the recording business.
